HIGH SCHOOL 101: Easing the Transition to High School

 

 

 

Target Audience:

Parents of freshmen students and/or those with students who are new to high school

 

 

Course Description:

This course is designed to help parents understand the differences between middle school and high school so that they will be better equipped to support students during the first year of high school. Participants will examine the common pitfalls students encounter as well as various school policies and procedures like attendance, grading, communication with teachers, and being involved.

 

 

Course Objectives:

Participants will have a better awareness of the following topics:

  • High School attendance and wavier policy
  • High School grading procedures and report cards
  • High School discipline policies and procedures
  • Ways to stay involved at the high school level
  • Effective ways to communicate with high school teachers and staff
  • Common pitfalls students encounter during in high school and the support structures provided by their high school

 

Date and Times:

Tuesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

 

  • September 20, 2011- High School attendance and wavier policy

 

  • November 1, 2011 - High School grading procedures and report cards / Effective ways to communicate with high school teachers and staff

 

  • January 31, 2012 - Common pitfalls students encounter during in high school and the support structures provided by their high school

 

  • April 3, 2012 - Ways to stay involved at the high school level

 

  • May 22, 2012 – Transitioning to the 10th Grade and Summer Credit Recovery Options
