Facilities Task Force Recommendations Approved

At Monday night's meeting, the Iredell-Statesville Schools Board of Education unanimously approved a plan that provides recommendations for the district's long-range facilities needs.  Submitted by Dr. Kenny Miller on behalf of the Iredell County Schools Facilities Task Force, the plan calls for approximately $250 million in renovations, repairs, and additions.

 

"We want to be very clear.  This plan is simply a road map for what the committee feels are the long-range needs of our schools," said Miller.  "This plan is a living, breathing document and can certainly change as our needs change and as funding changes."

 

Dr. Miller also stressed that, though the plan is in place, the funding for the plan is still very much in question.

 

"Some of the immediate, first-priority needs will likely have to be addressed within the limitations of our current capital budget," said Miller.  "But until funding for the other projects becomes available, we will have to defer a lot of maintenance issues and a lot of needs at our buildings."

 

The recommendations were developed by a committee comprised of board of education members, county commissioners, and community members appointed by the board and the commissioners.  Mooresville Graded Schools was also included in the group.

 

After approval by the board of education, the recommendations now go to the Iredell County Board of Commissioners for approval. Approval of the plan is simply an agreement on the overall needs assessment presented, and not a guarantee of funding availability.
