West Iredell Senior Wins Beta Scholarship

The National Beta Club recently announced that Christy Barker, a senior at West Iredell High School, has been awarded a $1,000 Beta Scholar award.

Barker was selected from among more than 700 candidates nationwide.  The National Beta Club awarded 221 scholarships.

Barker plans to attend Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC following graduation.  She was recommended for the award by West Iredell High School Principal Todd Holden.

"This outstanding young person represents the true spirit of National Beta," said Mr. Ken Cline, executive director of the National Beta Club, "having excelled not only academically, but in leadership and service to school and community as well."

Eric Cook, the local club sponsor, said he has not had a student recognized as a Beta Scholar in his seven years sponsoring the program.

"I'm very proud of Christy for this tremendous accomplishment," said Cook.  "She is a wonderful representative of our school, and an asset to our community."

Barker is the daughter of Michael and Teresa Barker.
