News from Nurse Roseman

From the Nurse:

“Does your child need health insurance? Your child may qualify for free or low-cost health insurance programs in North Carolina called Health Check and NC Health Choice. They offer a wide range of benefits, including vision and dental coverage. To check income guidelines or get an application, go to: http://www.nchealthystart.org/public/childhealth/index.htm  The school nurse also has applications.

If your household has been affected by a "stomach virus",  please stress the importance of good handwashing to your family.  The Norovirus is contagious even after symptoms have subsided, so it's recommended that those who were infected do not engage in food preparation for 3 days after symptoms stop.

“Flu” reminders:

Remember that prevention is the best medicine.  I encourage the “flu shot”, frequent handwashing &/or use of hand sanitizer, covering coughs & sneezes,  and avoiding touching eyes, nose & mouth.  It’s very important not to share personal items such as cups and towels.

If your child becomes ill, please do not allow him/her to return to school until fever is gone for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing drugs.

WARNING:  please do not give your child any products containing aspirin when they have the flu or appear to have just recovered from the flu.  Check the list of ingredients on the container for words such as aspirin or salicylates or acetyl salicylic acid.  These substances can lead to Reyes Syndrome, which can be deadly.  For a complete list of products, check out www.reyessyndrome.org     Even Pepto-Bismol contains salicylates.
