My Classroom Mission

My personal mission as an educator of exceptional children is to encourage students' success by providing them with high-quality, direct instructional methods that will ignite their passion for learning and teach them the skills they will need to learn and develop into successful, productive citizens of a diversified society~

Personal:
I am a native of Wilkes County, NC, and I am married to Kim Lewis Hancock. We  have two children (Alex and Zari'). We enjoy spending time together as a family. I also use my talent to sing gospel music."

Education:
I graduated from West Iredell High School. I then went on to pursue an education in Interior Design at what is formerly known as American Business and Fashion Institute in Charlotte, NC (The Art Institute of Charlotte). I graduated with a two-year degree in Interior Design. I moved to Atlanta, Georgia and pursued additional studies in Interior Design at The Art Institute of Atlanta. In 1994, I moved back to Statesville, NC and began to pursue my studies in Special Education. I enrolled in Mitchell Community College  and later graduated with an A.A. Degree with a concentration in Education. I transferred to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and graduated with a B.A. in Sociology with a minor in Psychology and Education. In 2006, I graduated from UNC-Charlotte with a Master's of Art in Teaching (MAT) Special Education: General Curriculum.

Experiences:
I began working for Iredell-Statesville Schools (I-SS) in 1995 as a teacher assistant/bus driver in the traditional classroom at East Iredell Elementary School. The following year, I was asked by the principal if I would be interested in a teacher assistant position in the Autistic classroom...I accepted and I continue to teach students with disabilities today. While out of school one summer, I mowed lawns for I-SS with the grounds crew (I had a blast)! As I neared the end of finishing my requirements to teach, I decided to substitute in various I-SS schools. I also began working for a local agency that provided community-support services to children and adults with developmental disabilities.

In 2002, I began my teaching career at North Iredell High School. I taught English I, II, III, and IV resource/inclusion classes. I also provided homebound instruction, remediation, and tutorial sessions for students with disabilities. In 2005, I transferred within the school to teach the Occupational Course of Study (OCS) diploma pathway

Today~I continue to teach the OCS pathway and English Inclusion classes. I am one of two Area Representatives for the North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE). I continue to drive a school bus, tutor, remediate, mentor (new teachers and students), and provide homebound instructional services. I continue to love teaching, and I enjoy helping my students learn and grow into productive adult members of our society~
