|Iredell-Statesville Schools are among the safest schools in the state, according to a N.C. Department of Education report.
This success is based on two joint policies:
First, the school board holds a "Zero Tolerance" policy regarding violence and weapons in school. Students are expelled for fighting. Anyone bringing any type of weapon oneo campus will be arrested. School Resource Officers work at each school to advise students and to give weight to the seriousness of this policy.
Second, Iredell-Statesville Schools provide a comprehensive Student Assistance Program which includes group counseling to help students learn to deal with specific problems ranging from communication problems with peers or parents to drug and alcohol abuse to sexual abuse.
Conflict resolution is taught all students beginning in the 6th grade.
Peer mediation, in which students resolve their own conflicts, is a key part of the program. The goal is to teach children to talk a problem out rather than fight it out.
