PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (sometimes also called PBS). PBIS is not a program or curriculum, but rather a decision-making framework that guides selection, integration and implementation of the best evidence-based behavioral practices for improving behavior outcomes for all students.
The framework is comprised of three main levels that are aligned to the North Carolina model for RtI (PBIS can also be referred to as Behavioral RtI). The Universal level involves setting, teaching and reteaching several essential yet simple expectations for all students. Positive reinforcement is used to encourage and cement positive behaviors. The secondary level focuses on small group and lower-level interventions to support struggling students and the tertiary level focuses on intense interventions.
At I-SS, we currently have 19 elementary and middle schools at various stages of PBIS implementation!
