FIRST Robotics is CCTL's sports team. The 2010-2011 robot played tic tac toe and housed a mini robot who could climb a pole to turn on a light. The 2011-2012 robot played basketball and did gymnastics. The 2012-2013 robot threw Frisbees and climbed a tower. Just like a race team, the Robotics team members work in a pit area to keep the robot running throughout the events.
"The varsity Sport for the Mind," FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It’s as close to "real-world engineering" as a student can get. Professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.
Founded by CCTL, the Elemental Dragons FIRST robotics team is a 4-H club. We now have members from VPAC and CCTL. We are currently looking to expand our membership base to be more competitive next year. We would like to extend an invitation to students who might be interested in becoming members. We build robots according to FRC specification to perform various tasks while competing against and/or assisting other teams. Our intense build season runs for six weeks, from January through February; we compete in the NC Regional event in April. The team meets outside the build season to develop the skills needed to design, build, and test the robot.
