First Grade provides exciting learning experiences for young children.  Our methods of teaching young children are driven by the Common Core State Standards.  The methods used in teaching reading and writing skills are as follows:

Guided Reading and Writing
Shared Reading and Writing
Independent Reading and Writing
Scott Foresman Basal Reading Series
Letterland
Accelerated Reading

We will ensure your child receives an individualized education based on his/her learning needs. We will be implementing the Primary Years Programme framework for a transdisciplanary approach to teaching, this means that we will teach all of the subjects together so we can dig deeper into learning. We will encourage students to be inquirers and investigate what interests them. Students will also start Spanish class once per week.

The method used in teaching math skills is manipulative based where children learn through hands-on activities.  Classroom computers enhance the communication and math skills taught as well as technology skills. We also attend a few fun-learning field trips per year.  We hope all children will experience success and be life-long learners here at Coddle Creek.
