Reading:

Reading is a vital part of our curriculum.  Reading enables us to imagine, explore, and understand our world.  In fifth grade, we "build" our comprehension by constructing story maps, doing character analyses, and identifying elements of fiction. We also strive to proficiency in locating main ideas and supporting details. Cognizance of main ideas is the key to comprehension.

We make predictions utilizing the knowledge we bring to print. This predictive skill, in turn, augments the knowledge we bring to print in the future. Predictability of story lines familiarizes us with the usual sequence of events (problem, climax, resolution, etc.), character development, and various techniques used by authors..

The other side of comprehension encompasses the "nuts and bolts" of reading skill. These skills include, contrasting two of more concepts, the art of paraphrasing, implementing figurative language, differentiating between fact and opinion, interpretation of poetry, etc. Fifth graders at Celeste Henkel endeavor to refine all their reading skills.

What would a reading program be without sufficient supplementation Celeste supplements its reading program with class novels, an excellent media center and Accelerated Reader - a computer network program proven to develop comprehension
