2011-2012 WIMS DRESS CODE

The school dress code is adopted to enhance the learning environment of West Iredell Middle School students. The school dress code stated herein will be abided by during the school day. This includes field trips and after school events. Some special days will be designated during the school year as days that the dress code will be altered. Examples of these days are team jersey day, jean days, hat day, or days designated as spirit days. These days will be announced in advance.

TOPS AND BOTTOMS

Shirts should be tucked in if they extend below the wrist with the arms extended down by your side. Colors: Solid colors of white, gray, black, royal, navy blue, Carolina blue, and light blue(No aqua or teal colors). Types of shirts: Crewneck, Polo or oxford style of appropriate size. (Short or Long Sleeve). No sleeveless shirts are allowed. Length of shirt: Must be long enough to not show midriff/ back when arms are raised. The only logo permitted on shirts/sweatshirts is that of West Iredell Middle School or the Iredell-Statesville school system. Only one factory button from the collar down may be unbuttoned. Shirts should not have necklines that reveal cleavage. Pant bottoms can be worn in the Solid colors of tan, black, or navy (dark) blue. Males may wear slacks or shorts (athletic shorts are not allowed). No denim (of any color) and no camouflage . Females may wear slacks, capris, shorts (athletic shorts are not allowed), jumpers, skorts, skirts, and leggings if covered by a skirt/dress. No denim (of any color). No knit, skinny pants, sweat pants, camouflage, or stretchy material may be worn. No writing, logo or artwork on male or female slacks. Bottoms should be appropriate size and worn above the hip. No slit in the hemline of any skirt, skort, or jumper. Shorts, skorts, and skirts can be no more than three inches above the knee. NO PANTS/SHORTS SHOULD BE WORN THAT HAVE HOLES IN THEM or ARE FRAYED.

OUTER WEAR

Sweatshirts or sweaters are the only outerwear allowed in the classroom. No logo or writing is permitted other than that of West Iredell Middle School. Colors: Solid colors or two color combinations of white, gray, royal, Carolina, or navy blue. Coats, jackets, gloves, scarves, and windbreakers are not allowed in the classroom, and must be stored in lockers.

SHOES/SOCKS/HEADGEAR /HAIRCOLOR

Students are required to wear shoes at all times. Shoes designed to be buckled, tied or otherwise fastened, must remain buckled, tied or fastened. No shower shoes, bedroom shoes, or shoes with heels higher than two inches. Socks must be the same color and solid in color. If shoes have laces, they must be tied and be the same color (white, black, brown). No headgear shall be worn in the school. Hats, caps, hood, tobaggans, scarves, visors, bandannas, sweatbands, combs, brushes, or any other headwear are not to be worn on the head. Bandanna print on any type of headband is not permitted. Ornamental headbands or headwear taller than ¼ inch will not be permitted. Sweatbands worn around the neck arms, or legs, are not permitted. No hair color of unnatural color will be allowed. Examples: bright red, pink, green, blue, purple, and orange.

JEWELRY /BELT/PURSES/BOOKBAGS

With the exception of earrings, no body jewelry or body painting shall be visible (other than neckwear worn inside the shirt). No visible body piercings, other than the ear, are acceptable. No jewelry with inappropriate symbols will be allowed and necklaces must be of appropriate length and color. Students are not to wear jewelry or other attachments not consistent with community standards or that could pose a health or safety hazard to either the student or the other students in his/her presence. Belts must be either brown or black. No other colors will be permitted. Belts must be worn properly.  Purses should not be larger than 81/2 by 11 inches.Bookbags/cinch bags, should be kept in the locker during the school day. They should not be carried to classes.

EXCEPTIONS

Students may wear West Iredell Middle School and Iredell-Statesville School system t-shirts, sports jerseys or uniforms, and sweatshirts on school spirit days and days as determined by the school administration. New or transferring students shall be given a reasonable time, as approved by the school administration, to obtain proper uniforms, with said time not to exceed 5 school calendar days.  Student shall be allowed to participate in religious expressions to the extent they currently are allowed to do so under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. This policy shall not violate any other law or statute.  Upon request and documented need, West Iredell Middle School will assist parent/guardians in obtaining permitted dress code for students.

NON-COMPLIANCE

Failure to comply with dress code policy will be handled by the following procedures:

• First Offense—the student will be given the opportunity to correct his/her dress. Failure to correct will result in ISS and/or assistance through the school “clothes closet”. No other warning conferences will be allowed during the year.

• All other infractions will be handled with an ISS assignment.

• Repeated dress code violations will result in suspension from school.

Chronic failure to comply with the dress code (low worn pants, exposed stomachs and backs, exposed underwear, low

tops, and continual violation of dress code) will be treated as insubordination, and will result in suspension from school.

**The Administration shall conduct an annual review of the effectiveness of the School Dress Code.

Clothing and items associated with gangs are not to be worn in school or on school premises. Students wearing such items will be asked to remove them. The wearing of such items may be cause for suspension.  Students are not to wear jewelry or other attachments not consistent with community standards or that could pose a health or safety hazard (Example: large hoop earrings, etc…) to either the student or the other students in his/her presence. Any jewelry or other items are prohibited when worn in any pierced body part other than the ear.
