• Reading Response Journals

Posted by Michelle Stevens at 10/23/2012
We have begun a new reading activity in our class:  DEAR (Drop Everything and Read).  DEAR occurs every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for the first 10-12 minutes of class.  During this time, students read in a book of THEIR CHOICE and respond to predetermined questions in their journals.  Sometimes they create questions, sometimes they make connections, and other times they summarize what they've read.  It seems like the kids are enjoying this reading activity - I know I do!  I read and write right along with them!

  • Edmodo!

Posted by Michelle Stevens at 9/21/2012
Edmodo is here!  Edmodo, an educational communication site, is now part of our classroom!  It's a little like Facebook, BUT DON'T PANIC!! It is MUCH safer!  The only people who can interact with us are the folks in our class.  "Friend requests" and "private messaging" do not exist; they can communicate to either me or the entire group, not individuals.  Edmodo is an educational site, so I can do things like give assignments, take polls, list homework assignments, and get feedback here.  We'll be using it in class, and for those who have internet access at home, they are welcome to use it there, too.  There is also a way for parents to join, but I haven't mastered that part of it yet.  Once I figure it out, I'll let you know via blog on my webpage. Please let me know if you have any questions!  I think the kids are going to enjoy Edmodo - they love technology, and hopefully this will keep them more engaged in what we're doing in the classroom!

  • When students are absent...

Posted by Michelle Stevens at 9/18/2012
When students are absent, it is important that they get the work they missed.  Now that your child is in the 8th grade, it is YOUR CHILD'S responsibility to get this work, and we have a great classroom system to help them:  The back board is the place for students to find out what was completed and/or turned in on the day that was missed, and there are also folders (for every day of the week) that hold any handouts/notes that were given out that day.  If your child still has questions about what was missed, I will be GLAD to help out, but he/she needs to check the board first.

  • Welcome to our classroom!

Posted by Michelle Stevens at 9/17/2012
Thank you for taking the time to log in and check out what's going on in your child's Language Arts classroom!  It's the fourth week of school, and there is already so much going on!  PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE keep yourself updated on homework assignments; so many times the kids don't or won't take the time to write down what they need to remember.  Within the next week or two, I will be sending home PARENT FOLDERS so that you can see what your child has been doing in the classroom.  WORK SENT HOME MUST COME BACK TO SCHOOL.  These items are for you to look at and go over with your child if need be, but please sign and send the folder back to school.

Please let me know of any questions or concerns you may have!  You can reach me via email (best), webpage (blog), or phone (704.873.2887).
