  • New Unit on Monday

Posted by Cristopher Coey at 4/11/2011 8:35:00 AM
Hopefully everyone enjoyed the genetics unit we just completed last Friday with our genetic disorder projects and the viewing of the film 'GATTACA'. It was a pretty good flick, huh? The movie definitely gives you a glimpse into what the future could be like, and the ethical questions that surround the concept of genetic engineering.

Anyway, today we will begin a new unit on motion and forces, first starting with simple machines and how they make work easier. These can be everything from levers, screws, wedges, and ramps, to pulleys, wheels and axles. Much like the last unit, students should expect a bit more homework than what they're accustomed to in this class. The unit will also culminate with the construction of a Rube Goldberg project wherein students will make a machine of their own using a combination of many different simple machines. It should be pretty cool!

  • Disorder Project UPDATE

Posted by Cristopher Coey at 3/23/2011 4:15:00 PM
Just to be sure everyone knows what is expected of them, all students are responsible for THREE things with this project:

    (1) A typed/written report on the disorder of your choice; it should be double spaced (in 12-point Times New Roman font) and AT LEAST TWO pages, OR single spaced (in 12-point Times New Roman font) and AT LEAST ONE page; you must also have a bibliography page citing AT LEAST THREE different sources.

    (2) A poster, display board, power point, OR glogster, etc., displaying tidbits of information from your written report (which should only be the most important things about the disorder) AND pictures of people with the disorder, diagrams of chromosomes, and/or family Punnett squares, etc.

    (3) The presentation of the written report itself, with the poster (etc.) accompanying you as you read the information; also be prepared to answer any questions your fellow students or I may have!

If you have any other questions or problems, please e-mail me as soon as possible or call (704) 799 0187.

  • Genetic Disorder Research Project

Posted by Cristopher Coey at 3/21/2011 4:05:00 PM
Today we are beginning a project where students must research and study a genetic disorder of their choice. Students may work with ONE other person, just as long as they have me for science. Also, students will be presenting their project to the rest of the class using poster board, display boards, etc. We will be in the library doing research today, Tuesday, and Thursday of this week, and students are also encouraged to do research at home as well. Please only visit approved websites via the address I gave out in class:

The tentative due date for the entire project is Tuesday, March 29, 2011.

This is to inform parents that, again, your child has homework tonight working more with genetics and Punnett squares. Be sure your kids refer to their warm-ups and graded homework if they are having trouble or need more help!
