The Yearbook Staff Advisor: Mrs. Watts Duration: Year Long Prerequisite: Academic Proficiency Do you want to leave your mark at LMS by helping to create the book that captures your middle school memories? Then sign up for Yearbook! The yearbook staff will be responsible for creating and managing the 2010-11 LMS yearbook. The staff will consist of two teams: the creative team and the marketing team. The creative team will work to photograph, design, layout, and edit pages. The marketing team will create a budget, manage finances, and create a marketing strategy for selling yearbooks. Jazz Band / Advanced Band Advisor: Mr. Townsend Duration: Year Long Prerequisite: Band Student, Academic Proficiency 1. Advanced Jazz Rhythm Study 2. Playing advanced songs in the rock, blues, swing, and pop styles 3. Teach students to do "ad lib" solos 4. Present a concert with the 7th & 8th grade band on the Winter and Spring Concerts 5. The Jazz Band allows has the freedom to explore the collective interests of its members |
Chess Club Advisor: Mrs. Stockman Duration: Year Long Prerequisite: Academic Proficiency The LMS chess club will begin with the basics to establish a solid understanding of the rules of chess. Club members will compete with fellow members in exhibition matches, ranked matches, and club tournaments to determine our starting lineups for district and state-level competitions. The chess club will call upon the talents of chess-playing community members to share strategies and provide fresh matches for club members throughout the year. LMS will host its second invitational chess tournament and use the proceeds to purchase additional game sets and resources. All ability levels are welcome. This game takes 10 minutes to learn and a lifetime to master! |
Robotics Club Advisor: Mr. Cioffi Duration: Year Long Prerequisite: Academic Proficiency The Robotics club will use LEGO Mindstorm kits to explore engineering and computer programming. At the beginning of the year we will focus on the basic building techniques and learn to use the computer programming software. Towards the middle of the year, students will work in teams to complete the mission for the district competition that will be held in April. Along with competing in the district competition, we will try to put together an invitational competition to be held here at LMS. Eventually the club would like to progress towards competing in other robotic challenges around the region. Depending on the size of the club, students may have to earn a spot on the competition team that will compete in district and other challenges. The competition team will be determined through a series of "tryouts" and in class participation. |
Battle of the Books Advisor: Mrs. Milliken Duration: Year Long Prerequisite: Academic Proficiency Battle of the Books is a district and statewide competition for 6th - 8th grade students sponsored by the North Carolina School Library Media Association. Students are required to read a total of 27 books from the North Carolina Battle of the Books Competition list. Teamwork and the ability to work in a group are paramount to the success of the team. Our Battle of the Books Club may have up to 20 students, but our Battle of the Books Competition Team is limited to 12 students or less. Battle of the Books Team members will be selected from the BOB Club based on elimination rounds and tryouts in January at the school level. The LMS BOB Team has won the County Championship several times and has competed at both the Regional and State level. |
Advanced Chorus Advisor: Ms. Parker Duration: Year Long Prerequisites: Academic Proficiency, Audition Show Choir is open to students by audition. The Show Choir will provide opportunities for students to pursue music learning through song and dance. This will be a performing group and participants must be willing to sign a contract to participate in ALL concerts and performances. Auditions will be held and students who sign up will receive more information from the coach of this club. |
Newspaper Advisor: Mr. Coey Duration: Year Long Prerequisite: Academic Proficiency Wouldn't it be cool to see your name in the paper? Ever wanted recognition for being the great writer you are? Join the Lakeshore Middle newspaper next fall and your dreams could become a reality! In newspaper, we will not only report what goes on here at LMS, but also sharpen our basic writing and communication skills. |
The Origami Club Advisor: Ms. Adams Duration: Year Long Prerequisite: Academic Proficiency Welcome to the fabulous world of Origami! Origami is more than 'The Art of Paper Folding'; it engages students in the areas of expressive & creative art, paper sculpture, mathematics, 3-dimensional science, following directions & interpreting diagrams, product driven projects, attention to precision, improving motor and intellectual skills, multicultural awareness, just to name a few. Best of all, Origami is simply FUN TO DO! The Origami Club will explore the following areas: the basics, classical origami, action/toy, money-origami, aerogami, modular origami, and tessellations. Students will create a teacher-guided origami piece in each area to get an overview of the possibilities. Students will then learn the basic base folds at their own pace. After students master the basic base folds, each student will have the choice of: - going into depth of a base fold leading to mastering difficult pieces from that base fold
- develop folding proficiency across multiple base folds and levels
- develop folding proficiency in a specific discipline area (for example: modular origami)
The Origami Club also does school-wide projects such as the current project: Create 1000 Cranes Canopy in the name of peace and health for all the children around the world. A future club project will be an 'Origami World' to be displayed in the school media center where the world will be represented through origami. |
