Joan Milliken, Library Media Coordinator, National Board Certified Teacher Bachelor's Degree in Education: Bowling Green State University, Ohio Mrs. Milliken has been the librarian at Lakeshore Middle School since 2002. She was previously at Lake Norman Elementary School. To be able to recommend books to her students, she reads books from her school library shelves every night. A voracious reader, she averages at least 100 pages a night. She writes book reviews for all books she reads and also gives frequent “Book Talks” to both Language Arts Classes and individual students. “I believe that everyone likes to read; some just haven’t found the right type of book yet! The best part of my job is helping students find books they love to read.” Favorite Quote: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go!” I Can Read With My Eyes Shut by Dr. Seuss Mrs. Milliken has been a presenter at the North Carolina School Library Media Association's State Conference. She has also achieved National Board Certification. Collaborative Lessons are another of her strengths. She teaches lessons with teachers from many subject areas: Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Health, and Computer. Other activities include: 10 years as Battle of the Books Coach: (the LMS 04-05 team won the County, won the Northwest Region, and placed 6th in the State Competition), 14 years as a Spelling Bee Chairperson or Judge, McTeacher Night Coordinator, Li’bear’y Caring Project Coordinator, NOW Grant Teacher Collaboration Project Participant, School Website Manager, Team Leader, and School Improvement Team Participant.
