NC Standard Course of Study
 
Students will develop knowledge and skills to enhance:
 
I.   Mental and Emotional Wellbeing
      a. Identify causes and symptoms of anxiety and depression and other common mental illness.
      b. Learn and utilize stress management techniques
      c. Understand the health risk associated with stress on mind,body, and personal relationships
 
II. Personal Health
      a. The improtance of Breast Self Exam /Testicular Self Exams on early detection of cancer, treatment and
          survival
      b. Identify factors that contribute to chronic disease
      c. Identify lifestyle changes that will decrease risk of chronic illness

III. Reproductive Health and Safety Education
      a. Learn factually accurate biologiacal and pathological information that is related to the human reproductive
         system
      b. Create strategies that develop and maintain reproductive and sexual health
      c. Understand the effectiveness and safety of all FDA approved methods of reducing the risk of
         contracting sexually transmitted diseases. medical care for sexually transmitted diseases and information on
         local resources for testing
      d. Identify the effectiveness and safety of all FDA approved contraceptive methods in preventing pregnancy
      e. Identify how sexually transmitted disease are and are not transmitted
      f. Understand the positive benefits of abstience until marriage and the risks of premarital sexual activity
 
IV. Nutrition
      a. Understand how healthy eating can reduce therisk for chronic disease
      b. Analyze the benefits of nutrients
      c. Predict short and long term effects of eating disorders
 
V. Substance Abuse 
     a. Analyze risk of using alcohol around water or in cars
     b. Fetal Alcohol Sundrome
     c. Predict the effects of drug use on self and others
 
 Classroom Expectations 
1. Homework turned in will be deducted by 10% for each day late.
2. Have all materials ready when the bell rings
3. Stay in assigned seat.
