Mr. Leonard's 6th grade science class will engage the world through science. We will learn how scientists think and what scientists have learned about the world. We will study what scientists have learned about how organisms relate to one another and the places they live. We will learn about what scientists have discovered about the Earth's geology. We will also learn about waves, sound, light, energy, temperature and heat. We will accomplish this through reading, writing, critical thinking, and scientific problem solving.
Dear Parent
This will be a year of challenging study as we engage the world through science.
Your student will do a great deal of reading and writing in my science class this year. Iredell-Statesville Schools and Brawley Middle School Administration strongly encourage their teachers to incorporate rigorous reading and writing lessons into class instruction. Your student will likely read a good deal more than you would anticipate for a science class.
I plan to elaborate on your student's reading and writing through lab-based classroom instruction. I can use your assistance managing class instruction on lab days. If you are interested in helping please contact me. Please see my Assignment Calendar for assignment due dates and lab dates.
About Me
I earned my Bachelors of Science degree in Outdoor Education from Montreat College, NC and my Master of Arts degree in Environmental Studies from Prescott College, AZ. I volunteered for the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (all in Wyoming) and worked as a Wildlife Biologist for Teton Science Schools' Wildlife Expeditions in Jackson, Wyoming.
I decided to teach science because I want to help cultivate ecologically responsible citizens. I enjoy making home with my family, gardening, and beekeeping.
