Dear Parents and Students,
I am excited about the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year. I hope that those of you who came to orientation went home and told your parents what great fun you had. Hopefully, these activities were just the beginning of many fond memories you will share during your high school years.
Meeting students and parents at orientation and Open House was very exciting. We will be participating in some introductory activities during the first few days of school. Also a Baseline Assessment must be administered during the first days of school to assess the skills of your student. Our first literature unit will be on various short stories found in our literature book. (Your student should have received a literature book during these first days of school which he/she will need in class and for homework most nights.) These will be covered during the first weeks of school. In addition to the literature mentioned, your student will also be completing vocabulary lessons, grammar practice, and writing assignments on a daily basis in class. Students will work on vocabulary, grammar, editing, and proofreading each day of each week and take the vocabulary/grammar quiz every two weeks. Your student can always be studying the vocabulary words and the D.O.L. sentences to prepare for the quiz.
I believe in giving the students many little grades to assess their skills rather than just a few large assignments. Students who spend time outside class preparing for the assessments will be more successful than those who do not study/complete assignments.
Please contact me with any questions you may have. Let's work together to ensure that your student has a successful experience in ninth grade.
