Word Within the Word Stems |
Word stems are part of the seventh grade curriculum and are used in all Iredell County middle schools. The benefits of the stem program are plentiful. The program will equip students with the ability to figure out the definitions of difficult vocabulary words and even mathematical concepts. Stems will also help in future advanced coursed in high school as well as the SAT. The word stem program in my class follows a weekly schedule. Every Wednesday students take a pretest on the stems for that week. If they make a 100% then they receive extra credit on their stem test. After the pretests on Wednesday, students are given time to study in small groups. This is followed by time to work on their stem activities. These activities allow for student differentiation because of the variety of activities and learning styles. On Thursday, students take their stem test which is a cumulative review of their stems from the beginning of the year. Afterwards, students receive their next list. I then run averages for all my classes on the test. After four weeks of stem averages, the winning class receives a homework, quiz, or +20 points on a stem test pass for their efforts. The stems continue until 30 lists have been covered. |
