I'd like to come to school to volunteer. What kinds of things can I do? If you'd like to help, contact Laura Rust, so she can set up your volunteer time and who you will work with. The following is a list of some ideas, but it is certainly not all-inclusive. You might: Contact other parents, listen to students read or read to students, collate or organize materials, work with a small group, help tutor AR, be a reading partner, offer field trip assistance, color or decorate forms or games, act as room Mom or Dad, file papers, cut laminated items, act as party coordinator, gather library resourcesw for a unit or special project, take down and put up bulletin boards, put up students' work monthly, act as school closing reporter (call parents of car-riders if school is dismissed early, be a math tutor, work with classes on special projects (like the 100th day of school, Week of the Young Child, National Library Week), help with fitness testing, help create memory books, be a lunch buddy, help with arts/crafts projects
What is a lunch buddy? A lunch buddy is a volunteer who comes to Shepherd once a week on a set day and time to eat lunch with one particular student. This lunch buddy gets to know that student and offers encouragement. Do you have half an hour a week to help enrich the life of a child at Shepherd? If so, please contact Mrs. Rust!
What should I do when I arrive at school to volunteer (after being contacted), and what should I do before I leave again? After receiving a request to help at school, please come to the main office, get a visitor pass, and sign in on your personal volunteer time sheet at the main desk. When you are ready to leave the school, please return to the main office and sign out on your personal time sheet.
I'd like to help the school, but don't have time to come in during the school day. Can I still help? Certainly! You could cut things out (laminated or not), find materials and resources, or call parents.
Don't see your question listed here? Email Mrs. Onyskin your question and we will get an answer to you as soon as possible, and maybe put the question here for the next person who may be asking it.
