Students may choose to not follow the sketchbook prompts, if they have other ideas that they would rather use.  Sketchbook prompts are provided for when students are stuck for ideas.  Whether or not the sketchbook prompts are followed or not, ALL SKETCHBOOK ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE ORIGINAL. This means that students should not copy a work of art or photograph done by someone else.  All imagery in the sketchbook assignment should be original and creative.

Purpose-
The purpose of sketchbook assignments is to give students the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and mastery of skills, concepts and techniques learned in art, as well as developing their own way of expressing creative thoughts.  Sketchbook assignments offer guided practice to show proficiency in drawing, shading, compositional skills, as well as the understanding and application of the elements of art and the principles of design.

As a result of completing each sketchbook assignment, students will:
~Elaborate on skills, concepts, or processes used in class
~Have the opportunity to investigate themes, ideas, or countries of interest to them
~Develop a personal style and use the opportunity for personal artistic expression
~Become better problem- solvers, by coming up with a creative way to "solve" each sketchbook prompt

Sketchbook assignments will almost always be due the last day of the week, either on Thursday or Friday.

Unless otherwise noted, the choice of artistic medium is up to the student, as long as the overall work of art is complete and displays the student's best work.  It is expected that, in order for students to continually develop artistically, students will spend an average of 5-10 minutes each day (that they have art) on the sketchbook assignment.  From time to time, students will have time in class to work on sketchbook assignments.

Sketchbook assignments will be graded using IB Rubric B.  Each sketchbook assignment will be graded, and will have an individual weight as "0" in the gradebook.  This does not mean that the sketchbook assignments do not count.  Feedback will be given to students on how they might improve on future works of art.  One summative sketchbook assignment grade will be given at the end of each quarter, worth 100 points, using the IB rubric conversion table on the "Grading & Assessments" page.  This summative sketchbook assignment grade will reflect the level that the student consistently achieved on the sketchbook assignments for the quarter.
