Welcome to Second Grade!

My name is Kathy Ridenhour, and I am happy to be your child's teacher.  I love teaching second grade students because they are so eager to learn and because they make such wonderful progress.  I enjoy helping them gain skill in reading, writing, math, and many other subjects.  In addition to working on academic skills, our class will also focus on citizenship --- being respectful, responsible, and caring.  We will do this through an emphasis on the Leader in Me program.  It features seven habits which are represented in our mission statement.

Our 2012-2013 Classroom Mission
We, the students of Ms. Ridenhour's and Mrs. Rash's second grade class, will work and play together to learn reading, writing, math, and many other skills and be ready for third grade and life.  We will do this by following the 3Cs and 7 Habits.

Our Strategic Goals
All students will be on or above grade level in reading by the end of the year as measured by 80% on the reading BA, and they will show growth.
All students will be on or above grade level in math by the end of the year as measured by 80% on the math BA, and they will show growth.

About Me
I grew up in Ewing, New Jersey; earned my undergraduate degree from Pfeiffer University in North Carolina; and earned my master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  This is my twenty-second year of teaching, and it is my eleventh year at Third Creek.

My interests include cooking, photography, crafts, swimming in the ocean, participating in gatherings at church, and getting together with my daughter and son and their families.

About Our Assistant, Mrs. Jane Rash
Mrs. Rash has lived in Statesville all her life except for one year she spent in New York and the time she was in college.  She was graduated from Statesvillle High School, and she attended UNC - Chapel Hill and Mitchell Community College.  She was a substitute teacher in ISS for five years and is now in her fifth year of being a T.A./bus driver.

All of Mrs. Rash's five children and two of her six stepchildren attended Third Creek.  Swimming, watching NFL football, and spending time with her family are activities she especially enjoys.
